Seatbelts...wear them!

Left to right: Tracey, Kyra, Martin, Mj, Dalia

According to researchers, “motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among those ages 5-34 in the U.S.,” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The CDC also states that more than 2.3 million were treated in emergency departments as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2009.  For this purpose, our group decided to do a blog on seatbelts. Though motor vehicle safety seems relatively negligible compared to other controversial issues in public health, it is important that people understand the risks involved with not wearing a seatbelt. Seat belts are designed to keep passengers safe.  According to the CDC seat belts reduce the risk of being killed or injured by 50 percent. In addition to the serious health factors associated with not wearing a seatbelt, Florida drivers receive citations for failing to wear seatbelts. Again, this relates to public health because passengers may be more inclined to wear a seatbelt because of the legal consequences. Consequently, this helps prevent the severity of motor vehicle accidents. As public health majors it is important that we bring awareness to the risks involve of not wearing a seatbelt. We chose the Public Health parking lot to showcase our issue. The Public Health parking lot was fitting because many students drive in that area determined to find a parking spot. It is important that a seatbelt is always worn in a vehicle, even if it is right before class!  While holding a seatbelt, we all decided to take a picture to express the simplicity associated with wearing a seatbelt. This simple decision can prevent a casualty and promote positive health.

  1. I completely agree that wearing seat belts is one of the most important things to do when in a car. It is silly to think that people don't wear seat belts because it is such a simply and easy thing to do, that will have a huge impact and potentially save your life. I know that in Florida people can receive citations for not wearing seat belts, but I feel like something more should be done because some tragic could happen from not doing something so simple.

  2. I think this is a really good example of public health. It is something that a lot of people take for granted. I mean imagine if we didn't even have seat belts or laws regarding the usage of seat belts. There would be so much more danger in accidents. I found your use of statistics to make a really powerful case regarding the significance of this public health measure. I was really shocked to see that so many deaths and injuries are result of motor vehicle accidents and that the risk of these injuries is cut in half when wearing a seat belt!Kudos public health for stepping in, and good job on your blog!

  3. I am a strong believer in wearing seat belts. Many accidents happen in a very close radios your our homes. So it is always better to be safe than sorry and put a seat belt on. Like the police commercials go "Click it or ticket".

  4. I am a big believer in seat belts. This is a great blog topic that sets a good example for public health. I recently interned for Hillsborough Sheriffs office and I attended many accidents that people have died for not wearing seat belts, and also gave out A LOT of citations for not wearing seat belts. A whole lot of people take it for granted, but little do they know they could easily be killed at any given second while driving. In the end everybody should be wearing seat belts even if your only driving a few blocks. Great job on the post, good example.

  5. I am in full agreement when it comes to the importance of wearing seat belts. I know there are some cases where people weren't wearing seat belts and they say if they were they would have been wearing it, they would have been killed. A close friend of mine was ejected from the vehicle and was in a coma for a week, the doctors said that if he was wearing his seat belt he would have been killed. Since then he feels like it is not necessary for him to wear his seat belt because he was better off without it. However, although he survived, there are significantly more situations when a seat belt has saved a life than without a seat belt. With much convincing, he now wheres his seat belt everywhere he goes.

  6. Wearing a seat belt is such a simple yet essential act when it comes to vehicular safety. I feel as though some people, mainly youth, think there's something cool about not wearing a seat belt. Like when I was younger wearing a helmet on your bike was an "uncool" thing to do. There's nothing cool about fatal accidents when death could be easily prevented with a seat belt. I lost a close friend in a car accident, and now putting on a seat belt is like second nature to me no matter where I'm going.
