Pregnancy for women should not be a stressful time in her
life. Prenatal care is one of the highest priorities of public health because
it deals with the well being of our children who are the future. As a
group, we took an adventure to the university mall in search for a public
health issue. After a short period of
walking we came across a stand that said pregnancy care center. We believe this
was a big public health issue because of the epidemic of teen pregnancy and for
the complications of pregnant women. Many
women do not get adequate prenatal care because it is ether too expensive or
services are not available. It was surprising to come across something that is
free and at the same time it could change someone life very drastically. The
services offered from here include free pregnancy test, counseling, and
information on how to have a safe pregnancy. Money causes stress and it should
not be the reason to have an unsafe pregnancy. This correlates to the problem
of infant mortality rate in the U.S. being so high because of socioeconomic
status. As we found in our public health book, our country is ranked 30th
in mortally rates with 6.9 deaths per thousand live births. Those in the lower status are not as educated
and don’t have the proper funds for prenatal care. The services offered here
help take the burden off the poor and uneducated pregnant women. On the stand it said, “you had plans…pregnancy
wasn’t one of them… talk to us” and that illustrates how easy it can be to get
help.

I've never seen anything like this! I think this is such a good opportunity and a great service for woman around the community. Cost is such a big issue with many health related problems and pregnancy is a big one. Women should be able to go get this free pregnancy testing and leave with a sign of relief and a better understanding on how to handle the situation instead of dong anything drastic. Also, the free counseling can make a huge difference in individual lives. I think you guys did a great job!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great example of "This is Public Health". Having an unplanned pregnancy can be a very difficult time for a woman and having somewhere to get counseling on different options and to get reliable information about prenatal care for free will help more women to get the help they need. Also, I like the idea of the free pregnancy test because more women will get tested which could prevent potential harm to their baby, for example, if they are smokers or drinkers, they will know to stop to keep their baby healthy.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I have never seen anything like this in such a public place. There is planned parenthood and organizations like that, but I never knew such things existed. This could be very helpful for teens or even young adults, that perhaps are not very educated, to get the help that they need. As we know early detection of pregnancy can prevent many complications down the road.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a great idea for our Public Health blog. I would have never thought of it, but I agree that it is one of the top issues in the general health of Americans. Many woman feel helpless, scared, and worried if they become pregnant unexpectedly. Having a public program like this that is easily visible in the public shopping mall is a great public health measure and definitely helpful for those in need! Another thing I really like about this program is the fact that it offers FREE services. No insurance and/or money to pay for prenatal care is a huge issue, especially in our area.
