For
this assignment, our group decided to place our sticker on a sanitation wipe
dispenser machine at a local Wal-Mart store. The sanitation machine is placed
in front of the door before you enter Wal-Mart and is right next to the
shopping cart station. Placing the machine next to the shopping carts helps remind people to sanitize their carts. We selected this location because there
is a lot of traffic at this store and it is important to keep everyone as germ
free as possible. Many students from USF shop there and could easily pick up
germs and bacteria and bring them back to campus, which may lead to a spread in
germs to other USF students and increase their chances of catching a cold. This
represents a public health issue because the goals of public health encompass
an entire population and because the sanitation machine was in such a public
and extremely used place, that got put into effect. The sanitation machine itself
is also an excellent form of preventing colds and the spread of germs, which is
also a staple of public health. This issue of sanitation is important because just
touching an object filled with germs can spread those germs and result in infectious
diseases. The more people that sanitize their carts before shopping for
groceries, wherever they shop, the fewer amount of infectious diseases that
will be spread around. There are so many germs on objects such as shopping
carts and deli counters, which means that it is important to sanitize before
touching those objects. From a public health standpoint it is important to look
at the society as a whole when dealing with sanitation. Individually, people
should sanitize in order to keep themselves safe and to decrease the chance of
passing germs onto other people.

This is a very good example of what public health is. I will be honest and admit that before I began learning about public health, I never thought that little things like this contribute and play a big part in the main goal of public health, which is prevention. Since Sam's Club is owned by and operated by Walmart Stores, Inc., they too have similar safety guidlines by witch they follow. This is a excellent way of spreading public health's work, if all stores pick off of each other in this respect, we are already on the road to better health!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very good example of how one little thing like putting hand sanitizer by shopping carts can go a long way in preventing the spreading of germs. Of course, this can help in keeping the community safe and healthy. The goal of public health is to prevent disease and promote health so I think this is a prime example of what is being done to prevent such germs from spreading. I also agree that because it is located in such a centralized area, where the shopping carts are, everyone uses the sanitizer therefore preventing any spread of germs throughout the community.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great idea! Sadly I can admit that I have seen the sanitation machines and kept walking past it without giving a thought to how it would affect the health of the public. If everyone as individuals actually sanitized it would help decrease the germs spread and save the public from potentially harmful diseases. This would be extremely helpful during the winter months when the flu is floating around. The more sneezing and sniffles that can be prevented the better.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everything that has been posted above me! Once I saw that Wal-Mart put these machines I thought it was probably one of the best ideas that they could have had. Unfortunately though I have never used them......shame on me I know! But for those people who do use them, or even for those who do not, the option presented to them is a huge step all its own. I believe that because of this there are now many diseases that kids, parents and USF students alike will lessen their risks of contracting any sort of sickness. And on a side note, I should start using these wipes.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, having sanitize whips near the entrance of walmart was great move on the store part. They are showing prevention and awareness to the community to take that small step to prevent passing on the flu or any type of infections to other shoppers. I know of many of my peers that shop there and does use the whips. I usually don't use the whips because I am always in a hurry, so this actually influenced me take the time and use them on shopping carts, or anything i have to use for shopping purposes.
