Sanitation in our Nation

Public health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. It also helps improve the health and well being of people in local communities and around the globe. One of the main goals of Public Health is to prevent health problems before they have any chance to occur. For the “What is Public Health” project our group has decided to place our sticker on the shopping cart sanitation wipe dispenser located conveniently at the entrance of our local Wal-Mart on Fletcher Avenue. We chose this location because of the countless number of people that shop at that Wal-Mart everyday and fail to wipe down their carts before they use them.
Most people do not ever think about wiping down their cart before shopping use and are inadvertently contracting millions of germs from the hundreds of customers that touch the very same cart everyday. Every time someone sneezes or coughs while they are shopping they are putting those germ-infested hands back on the shopping cart handle and if not disinfected properly, you are contracting all those germs! This is an extremely important issue geared towards Public Health because there are a countless number of infectious diseases that are carried by people each day and who knows if that person touching your cart is one of those carriers. Prevention is the main objective of Public Health and what better way to practice this concept than by using sanitation wipes as a way to prevent your self from contracting a potentially fatal illness.

  1. This is a very informative because I happen to be one of those people who do not wipe down their cart before using. I don't even think about who might have used the cart before me and what type of germs they left on the handle. This is definitely a good example of public health. The next time I go to Walmart I will know what to do.

  2. I have always been a fan of sanitation as a means of prevention, so this blog caught my attention immediately. I use these carts every week, and although I have always been cautious of sanitizing my hands before activities such as eating, it never occurred to me that shopping carts can be such huge germ carriers! It is really important to try and prevent illness, and I think this blog makes a great point: prevention is the key to health. Now I know what I need to do whenever I shop at WalMart!
