As I learn in class, Public Health is all about promoting health and preventing diseases. Now we see Public Health everywhere in our community in the hospitals, the parking lots, just to name a few. I was asking myself where is a significant place I could put my “What is Public Health” sticker. I went to a Wendy’s restaurant located at Bearss Avenue; I noticed that in the restroom not only that they are promoting hand washing for the customers; they are requiring it for the employees. The employees at this Wendy’s could not leave this restroom, no matter what reason they enter it for, without washing their hands.
Well, you could be asking how that is a public health issue. These employees are touching, preparing foods that many people are eating. They can carry bacteria from the restroom and deposit them in the utensils, the wraps, plates, boxes they put the food in, or to other employees. These customers, who trust the food from Wendy’s, could be getting sick from their favored meal. Imagine if people are getting sick from this place, how many people from that community would be sick. It is important for the Public Health people and the customers to be sure that the employees are washing their hands, and not have to worry about getting any bacteria like E-coli, Salmonella, Streptococcus or many others by the employees from the restroom. This is important because Public Health has to make sure that the population is being safe.

This is a simple yet very important public health measure that I believe most people take for granted. We all expect to go to a restaurant and leave in the same healthy state that we entered with. Though restaurants could do a better job like better use of gloves and also changing the gloves frequently. I must say I have to give props to McDonalds, as that is the ONLY restaurant I have ever been to where I heard a bell go off and the manager made all the employees wash their hands.
ReplyDeleteAs simple as it is to wash our hands and take away the germs we assume that those preparing our food will follow the guidleines posted on the sign for everyones sake like you said. Most of never really think about all the public health efforts that went into making our food places safe and clean enviorments for us to eat in, but we sure are glad the measures are in place. Like you stated by posting the sign it is the first step in the business's plan to prevent the spread of disease amoung customers and employees. Even when we don't consider it public health workers are always working to making our enviorment and communities safer for those living in them.
ReplyDeleteAs a health care provider I understand the importance of hand washing. I wash my hands so much that my skin gets a little raw. Many bacteria and viruses are transmitted through peoples hands. Employees washing their hands to return to work is a great idea for a sign but a sign for those not employed(customers)as well. Hand wasshing is an important function in public health because it reduces the risk of transfering harmful bacterias and viruses.
ReplyDeleteI like that companys put that sign up in the restroom to remind their employees to wash their hands. I'm a server at a restaurant and they have the same sign in the restroom there. It's important for people working in the food industry to wash their hands frequently because bacteria and viruses can be transmitted by hand to food contact. I would not want to risk getting any of my customers sick so I do not mind washing my hands frequently.
