Public Health in the Park

The University Area Community Center was an ideal place to display public health. The center caters to children and senior citizens in the community. The park provides a place where children and seniors can utilize the amenities that are offered that will lead to a healthy and active lifestyle.
According to the park manager they are putting together a senior citizen program in the morning where the participants can exercise and socialize in a safe environment.
The center offers an after school program, which provides a healthy alternative to video games or television.  There are basketball courts, playground and classes available including karate. This is important to public health because of the rising numbers of obesity and chronic diseases.
The center also offers a program for teens. This program keeps the youth entertained in a supervised environment, helping to keep them out of trouble and away from the bad influences they may encounter.
An HIV awareness speaker visits the park to educate the adolescents. Along with the education of HIV they are also offering free testing. This is important in promoting awareness and preventing the spread of disease.
In addition to the previous programs mentioned, there is a fitness center that offers an affordable price of five dollars monthly for Hillsborough county residents. Due to the affordability at the gym, all residents can have access to a fitness facility.
If you would like to volunteer at the University Community Center they are actively seeking people to help out to make it an even better place.
You may contact the community center by phone 813-558-5212 or find more information on their website. http://uacdconline.org/uacdc/index.html

  1. The University Area Community Center is a great representation of many current public health issues – particularly obesity and spread of diseases in the United States. The exercise programs for the elderly, educational programs for a wide range of age groups that address significant health issues, and physical education lessons that are and will be provided and implemented by the park administration as well as the local government are excellent forms of primary and secondary prevention for obesity and spread of disease in the local area. The Community Center and other areas that promote these programs will help address and improve public health issues. Overall, the group blog did a good job in providing a concise and informative summary about public health issues associated with a local community center. Also, the contact information and website link also provided an extra touch by calling readers to become more involved in public issues.

  2. I love this idea from you guys. The community center allows people of all ages to learn that exercising can be fun, without having to think of it as strict 'exercise'. Offering a community center for kids to run around is a great way for parents to keep them away from all the electronics, like watching tv or sitting on the couch and using computers. Start them off young, and they will have a great start to a healthy life.

  3. This is a great resource for the community, and for people who need a place to get a little exercise. Not only is it free but it's a great way for young children to be active and learn to enjoy physical activity. If creates healthy habits for when they are older. If children enjoy things they are more likely to continue do it into adulthood.
