The Bioweigher

Our group decided to adhere our “This is Public Health” sticker on a Bioweigher machine located within GNC, a wellness store, inside of University Mall. This machine is placed near the front window, and its services are easily accessible for people to determine their health status in regards to their body weight. More specifically, this machine is designed to measure one's weight and to tell them if he/she is at a healthy weight given his/her body type and age. In other words, the machine lets one know if they are overweight, underweight, or at an appropriate, healthy weight. It asks questions about lifestyle, age, height, and weight in order to more effectively provide the user with an accurate response. Moreover, the Bioweigher machine relates to public health because obesity is continuing to be a major health issue in the United States. Further, it is evident that many people in our society are oblivious to the fact that they are at risk of becoming obese. Therefore, by providing a machine that can be easily utilized by the general public, more people can attain self-realization in regards to whether or not they are leading a healthy lifestyle. Not only this, but also more people will be given the opportunity to make adjustments to their diets and to their lifestyles before it is too late. In short, our group placed our sticker on this Bioweigher machine in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of obesity and to show this machine’s clear relevance to public health in its entirety.

  1. This is really cool! I think it's great that it takes age, height, and lifestyle into account to provide specific and useful information. Many people, when using a traditional scale, don't know how to interpret their weight and decide whether they need to make modifications in their diet and/or exercise routine. The Bioweigher, however, seems to offer people feedback that can easily understand and use. I think this type of technology really has the potential to help counter the obesity epidemic, and I hope it becomes more widely available!

  2. I really enjoyed reading why the group decided to place the "This is Public Health" sticker on a Bioweigher because I completely agree with the groups idea. The United States is really struggling with maintaining the populations percentage of obesity low. One is seeing more and more people becoming obese. This Bioweigher is one really good example to help prevent obesity in the United States. By having these Bioweigher's placed in different areas, the community is given an opportunity, to their advantage to receive quick weight results, just a few feet down from their favorite stores.

  3. I enjoyed reading this post because I buy supplements from GNC and I also approve of the message you guys are trying to get through. The United States has the largest population of obese individuals and more needs to be done to change this. I feel this bioweigher not only helps someone discover whether they are under or over weight but it also gives the customer a better understanding of what they may want to buy when walking into the store. It also gives any curious person an overall understanding of their overall health.
