For this assignment, the group
decided to go to the Employee Health Services at Florida Hospital. We decided
to place the sticker on a bulletin board that is stationed in the waiting room.
This bulletin board contains posters and fliers pertaining to getting the
seasonal flu shot, asking your doctor the right questions, to Workers
compensation in the rare case that one might get injured on the job.
We decided to visit Florida Hospital
because of its convenient location across the street from USF. We also chose it
because we thought that by placing the sticker in the Employee Health lounge,
more hospital employees would become aware of and take advantage of the
services offered by Employee Health.
Not
only does hospital staff help in the secondary dimension of public health, but
in the primary. This office is a major form of public health because it
prevents health problems that are transmittable from nurses, doctors, and staff
to be stopped before they can reach the patients. The employee health service
offers free immunizations given by RNs, LPNs, and Phlebotomists to health care
employees. Some health services provided are new hire-replacement physicals,
along with annual TB screenings and N95 mask fittings.
Employee
Health also informs each floor that each employee works on, of non-compliance by
their specific employees. This helps hold people accountable. Employee health
has convenient hours as well. Opening as early as 7 am to allow night shift
employees to come in and utilize services.
Overall, by making employees stay
constantly aware of all the health services that are available to them, it will
not only benefit them, but also the patients. As long as the employees are
maintaining their health then the more they can provide their services to the
patients they deal with.

I think it is wonderful that the Florida Hospital offers Employee Health Services. I did not know such services existed, but I think the effort gets one step closer to achieving a higher standard of public health for all individuals. Encouraging employees to maintain healthy bodies through providing free medical services is a great way to further prevent the transmittance of disease and illnesses, thus keeping more patients, and a little more of the overall population, healthier. It is also excellent that the sticker was left in the lounge so that more employees could be aware of the services offered to them. The assurance function of public health that makes sure services are accessible to everyone was accomplished with this act. I know from my previous work experience, and even here at USF, that there are oftentimes where free health services are offered and I am not able to take advantage of them because I am not aware of them at the time they are offered. I would be delighted to be an employee of the Florida Hospital because these employee services almost seem like a free, miniature health insurance plan.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a great place to put the "This is Public Health Sticker!" Many people do not know that these services exist including hospital employees. Many do not find out about them until the annual TB test is required and they have to go here to get it done. As a former transporter I had to go to our employee health services three times for the TB test and reading of the test. My mother and father also both work at the hospital and my mother has had to let other nurses know that they need to go visit the clinic because they weren't feeling well and could have passed it onto their patients. Great job!
